As a Black doula, my philosophy revolves around empowerment, advocacy, and cultural sensitivity. Here's an overview:
1. Empowerment: I believe in empowering Black birthing individuals to make informed decisions about their birth experiences. This includes providing comprehensive education about childbirth options, techniques for coping with labor, and support in creating birthing guides that align with their values and preferences.
2. Advocacy: I am committed to advocating for the rights and needs of Black birthing individuals within the healthcare system. This involves challenging systemic disparities in maternity care, advocating for culturally competent care from healthcare providers, and ensuring that birthing individuals are treated with dignity and respect throughout their birthing journey.
3. Cultural Sensitivity: Recognizing the unique cultural and historical context of Black and Indigenous childbirth experiences, I approach my work with cultural sensitivity and humility. I honor cultural traditions, rituals, and practices that may influence birthing preferences and provide a safe space for individuals to express their cultural identity during the birthing process.
4. Holistic Support: I believe in providing holistic support that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of birthing individuals and their families. This may include offering emotional support during labor, assisting with comfort measures and pain management techniques, and providing postpartum support to ensure a smooth transition into parenthood.
5. Community Engagement: I see myself as a member of the larger Black and Indigenous birthing communities, and I actively engage with community resources, networks, and organizations to promote positive birth outcomes and support birthing justice initiatives. This may involve collaborating with other birth professionals, participating in community events, and advocating for policy changes that improve maternal health outcomes for Black and Indigenous individuals.
Overall, my philosophy as a Black birth doula is rooted in a deep commitment to empowering, advocating for, and supporting Black and Indigenous birthing individuals as they navigate their unique birthing journeys.
